OS Locate App Overview and Details

Make the most of your adventures in the great outdoors with OS Locate. Used alongside your Ordnance Survey map, OS Locate is a fast and highly accurate means of pinpointing your exact location on the map, anywhere in Great Britain. If you have lost your bearings or simply would like a little reassurance, OS Locate is the ideal companion for all enthusiasts of the great outdoors.

The app converts GPS location readings from your mobile phone to Ordnance Survey National Grid references, enabling you to determine precisely where you are on an Ordnance Survey map. No mobile signal? No problem; OS Locate does not require a mobile signal to function – the inbuilt GPS system can be relied upon, even in the most remote areas.

Simply download the app and switch on your device’s location services (Settings – Privacy – Location services).

Compass accuracy: the app relies on your device’s internal compass and if this is inaccurate the displayed compass will be incorrect as well. Accuracy generally increases the longer you have the app open and many users report moving the device in a figure-eight help calibrate the compass and gives a more accurate reading. Of course, like any compass, keep away from metallic or magnetic objects!

OS Locate is packed with additional features. The ‘Share’ button allows you to connect with friends and family via messaging and social media – let them know where you are, how your adventure is progressing and what time you will be home. Use the handy digital compass to take your bearings – always ensuring you are on the right track. For those who are keen to learn more about maps and navigation, the ‘About’ button hosts a wealth of information including hints and tips and a guide to map reading. In addition, you will find simple yet comprehensive guides on how to use eastings and northings.

OS Locate – know where you are.

OS Locate is a complementary tool for Ordnance Survey paper maps. You should always have an Ordnance Survey paper map and baseplate compass when exploring the great outdoors.

Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

Please ensure your Location Services are turned on.

Useful. The grid ref is correct, but as others have pointed out the altitude is wrong by about 50m. Update: altitude is still wrong despite assurances it would be fixed. 5 stars if it’s fixed, but not holding my breath

I’m glad to see that the OS Locate app has been updated and is working again. Please add a “copy” button to facilitate sharing/using grid references.

Compass and os map ref work great. But why is the altitude reading 50 metres too high. I am now stood in the sea and it reads 50 metres please sort this out. 8/2021 Edit 1/2023 Altitude still reading approx 50 metres too high despite your comment it would be fixed in next release. That was nearly 18 months ago….

Not sure how useful this is. The altitude reading is really suspect. I was at a waterside setting a couple of days ago and the app. insisted the altitude was 50+ metres.

This has the potential to be a handy app. The UX design is good and it’s straightforward to use. However for me there are two main failings. 1) Unlike other similar apps, the altimeter is consistently inaccurate; over-reading typically by around 50-55m. 2) The share feature doesn’t work well. For me selecting “email” is the only reliable option. I can then get the relevant details inserted into the app of choice, be it email or some sort of messenger. The “message” option does not work properly.

Pretty good, more integration and intuitive use the better imo 🙂

No indication of accuracy, so no confidence in GR You can choose 6, 8 or 10 figure GR display but get no information about the current level of accuracy. I love the idea of still being able to get a GR while phone signal is poor or absent, but without accuracy data I think it’s pretty useless, just false confidence. Installed today and will test the location accuracy in some poor signal areas soon… but expect to Uninstall unless either it works brilliantly or it’s upgraded w accuracy (+/-m)

Very good. OS grid references – the de-facto method for defining a location in the British Isles for decades. W3W crops up everywhere in heavily commercialised contexts but the download size is about 1000% of this, with ridiculous T&Cs and permission requirements. Suggestion: A basic button on the front screen to copy the current location to clipboard, instead of relying on the usual “share” menu Android experience.
