I was born in the East End of London, in the borough of Hackney. My father was a costermonger and my mother a washerwoman. I grew up in a two-room house with no running water or electricity. We were poor, but I never felt deprived because I was surrounded by a large extended family and a close-knit community. I went to the local primary school and then to Hackney Downs Grammar School. I left school at 16 and started work as a clerk in a local solicitor’s office.
I have always been interested in politics and social justice, and I was an active member of the Labour Party from an early age. I was elected to Hackney Council in 1966, and served as the borough’s first black mayor in 1981. I was also a member of the Greater London Council from 1981 to 1986.
